"I am doing my best to demotivate Conor Whatmore and Paul Algotsson. But these guys refuse to retire". Teammanager DaWoozz sighs with a big wink of the eye.
He finds himself stuck between two different team interests: releasing the two oldest riders of the team would free up 140.000 which can then be used for training young talents. But the team could also use an extra trainer, and these two guys are wel suited for that job. But for that they need to be willing to retire with the team.
Swedish Paul Algotsson says: "There was no future for me with team Musac. Not as a rider, nor as trainer as that team has a no-trainer policy. I wanted to continu my career in professional cycling, so I moved on and took the chance Summerscape gave me. I feel I am still good enough to let my leggs speak. I am not even thinking of retiring! I know the team is pushing me in that direction as it let's me do many alternative jobs but I am not giving in to that manipulative strategy yet."
35 yr old Conor Whatmore has a history with top teams such as Sons of the Desert and EricV. "All my career I have been cycling for high division teams. I did not make my move to summerscape in order to retire real soon or to do alternative jobs. I want to feel a saddle between my legs", Whatmore says with a diplomatic sense of humor.
Meanwhile manager DaWoozz has difficulty keeping the sponsor happy. "summerscape.nl wants to see results. They said they want to sponsor the future of cycling, not a retirement home!"
"When I offered Paul and Conor a contract as a teamcaptain we also spoke about a future with the team as a trainer. They are aging but still regard themselves as competetive riders. And in their respective specialism they are and can be of added value. But the sponsor wants things differently." He explains.
If Paul and Conor don't change their minds, I have no other option than to let them go. And it probably means they will have to cycle or become a trainer at an ever lower division than Team summerscape is at. That would be an even bigger bummer."
The manager wants to underline that he would normally not have brought the conflict out in the open.
"Now that Conor and Paul have spoken about it to the press it is best I am open about the situation too. And no I am not angry with them. All they did was answer the question why they were riding so little races. They gave an honest answer and I don't want my riders to lie."
"Normally I would not share conflicts within the team with the world, but now that it has been in the tabloids already there's no reason to keep my mouth shut too. These two guys can have a long future within cycling and I'd love it if that is within team Summerscape! But that will not be on the bike for very long anymore."
